Chromotherapy - Healing with Light Therapy
Healing with light and color has a history dating back to 2000 BC and is still being used in present day. Lasers, LED lights, infrared saunas, chromotherapy, and phototherapy are all advancements of an age-old concept – the energy of color and light can heal. There are numerous references to the practice of using light as medicine date back to the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, China, and India. Treatments of the day described using sunlight as it radiated through different colors of stained glass and using colored rooms, paintings, and gemstones to heal
Fast forward to modern day and light therapy in various forms has become standard. Hospitals use phototherapy as a common treatment for jaundiced babies. Medical lasers are used for surgery and dentistry, and cold lasers are used to heal wounds in veterinary practices. Light therapy also treats seasonal affective disorders, depression, sleep disorders, skin diseases, rosacea, and acne.
One type of light therapy that I would like to introduce is chromotherapy and LED therapy which is the use of light in various colors to promote health and wellness and even cure ailments. While this may sound odd, there is a fair amount of research dedicated to healing with color.
At Chill Space, a leading NYC Health Spa, our infrared sauna delivers chromotherapy via LED lights that expose you to red, yellow, orange, green, blue and violet. Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a semiconductor encased in a glass type resin, that emits light. Each LED in a chromotherapy panel emits its light and color to achieve the following benefits:
- RED - Red light brings warmth, energy, and stimulation, therefore treating low energy, fatigue, colds, and chills. Red light energizes heart and blood circulation, it builds up the blood and heightens a low blood pressure. Red light energizes all organs and the senses which are hearing, smell, taste, vision, and touch. Red links with and stimulates the adrenal glands to release adrenalin, resulting in greater strength. Red light causes hemoglobin to multiply, thus increasing energy and raising body temperature. It is also excellent for areas that have become stiffened or constricted.
- ORANGE - Orange light is warm, cheering, and non-constricting. It has a freeing action upon the body and mind, relieving repressions. It stimulates creative thinking and enthusiasm and helps assimilate new ideas by inducing a transformation between lower physical reaction and higher mental response. Orange light treats the lungs, respiration, and digestion. It increases the function of the thyroid, relieves muscle cramps and spasms. Orange light aids in repairing inflammation of the kidneys, gallstones, menstrual cramps, epilepsy, wet cough, and sinus conditions.
- YELLOW - Yellow light helps strengthen the nerves and the mind. It helps create mental inspiration and stimulates higher mentality, making it an excellent color for nervous or nerve-related conditions or ailments. It also energizes the muscles while soothing pains in the nerves (shooting pains). Yellow light can be used for the treatment of the stomach, liver, and intestine disorders. It also speeds up the digestion and assimilation. Yellow light helps the pores of the skin and aids scarred tissue in healing itself.
- GREEN - Green light is the universal healing color so it may be used for just about any condition. When in doubt, green will always work. It rings psychological and emotional harmony and balance. Green light cleanses and balances our body to give a feeling of renewal, peace, and harmony. Green light treats hormonal imbalances, stimulates growth hormones and rejuvenation, increases immunity, strengthens the nervous system, and harmonizes the stomach, liver, and gallbladder.
- BLUE - Blue light can be used for any ailment associated with speech, communication or the throat. It cools down inflammations such as rheumatic inflammations, fever, and high blood pressure. Blue relieves the bursting headaches, calms strong emotions like anger, aggression or hysteria and brings tranquility. Blue light is anti-itching, anti-irritation (for instance redness of the skin), and anti-stress. The cooling blue rays bring peace to the mind that is worried, excited or in a constant nervous state.
- VIOLET - Violet light is the color of transformation, healing melancholy, hysteria, delusions and alcohol addiction and bringing spiritual insights and renewal. It helps to slow down an over-active heart, stimulate the spleen and the white blood cells, brings sleep, soothes mental and emotional stress and helps to detoxify the body. Violet light decreases your sensitivity to pain. It also promotes wisdom and inner strength and enhances artistic talent and creativity. Leonardo da Vinci believed that you could increase the power of meditation ten-fold by meditating under the gentle rays of Violet light, as found in Church windows.
A typical session of chromotherapy is 30 minutes, but you will feel the effects of light therapy almost immediately.
